Meditation for Balancing and Synchronizing the Cerebral Hemispheres

7. Meditation to Balance the Jupiter and Saturn Energies: A Technique for Treating Depression, Focusing the Mind, and Eliminating Self-Destructive Behavior

Sit with a straight spine either in a chair or on the floor (see Figure 7.1). The hands are facing forward with the ends of the Jupiter (index) and Saturn (middle) fingers pointing straight up near the sides of the body at the level of the chin. The elbows are relaxed down by the sides and the hands are near the shoulders. Close the ring and little fingers down into the palm, using the thumbs, and keep them there against the palm during the meditation. The Jupiter (index) finger and the Saturn (middle) finger are spread open in a V shape (or closed). The eyes are closed.

For 8 minutes open and close the Jupiter and Saturn fingers about once or twice per second. Make sure the two fingers open completely and close completely during the exercise. Simultaneously imagine the planets of Jupiter and Saturn coming together in front of you and then again going apart in synch with the finger movement—the planets should appear to go back and forth along a straight line, in and out to the sides in front of you. It does not matter whether you visualize Jupiter or Saturn on the left or right side.

In the beginning, the visualizatin part may be difficult to do, but this should not slow down the pace of the fingers, which play a more important role here. After 8 minutes, while continuing the same exercise, begin to inhale and exhale through the nose only with this movement: Inhale as the fingers open, exhale as the fingers close. Continue visualizing the planets for 2 additional minutes. Note during the first 8 minutes the breath is not consciously regulated.

Then, for the last minute, spread the two fingers and hold them wide apart (now they do not open and close, they remain in the fixed V shape), keeping them very stiff (which requires considerable effort) while also keeping the mouth in an O, or ring, shape. Breathe in and out of the mouth using only the diaphragm (not the wall of the upper chest) with a rate of one to three breaths per second. After 1 minute, inhale, hold the breath in, and tense every muscle tightly (including the hands and fingers, with the V shape kept rigid, arms, back, stomach) in the body for 10 seconds. Exhale and repeat two more times for 10 seconds. Then relax.

As previously noted in Chapter 9, Yogi Bhajan explained the effects of this meditation:

This meditation will help increase a person’s ability to focus and concentrate and also increase the IQ of an individual over several months of practice. The mind becomes very focused and clear, the brain becomes very energized. This technique will also help eliminate depression. This technique can also enhance math skills for those who have difficulties with math. The Jupiter and Saturn energies
